First School Buses

The first school buses were horse drawn wagons. The invention of the concept of a school bus greatly influenced the schools. School districts were able to be enlarged allowing for more increased education to rural areas.

The "modern" school bus came into existance in the 1950's

  2. I had no idea that they had horse drawn SCHOOL BUSES! I am learning so much today!! I wonder how many children they could fit on one bus. Its interresting to see that we went from horse drawn buses to school buses to even luxury buses with bathrooms and televisions on them!

  4. This is crazy! Horses taking us to school? Now,some buses are just as good as sitting in your living room, reclining and watching movies. I can just see parents having a fit now if horses were any where near their children, lawsuits left and right.

  5. That is very interesting...an it most likely established more students enrolled being that transportation was given. This may have been one of the finest accomplishments for education.

  6. School busses in a sense enabled better communication among human beings. For the first time children in rural areas could begin to make it to school on a regular basis. They may not have been too happy about that but they sure did benefit from it and so did society.

  7. Without the school bus, many people in rural areas would have lacked the motivation to attend school. As a whole, this decreases the overall quality and equity of the country. Although this country relies on undereducated people to do lesser jobs, the country could not risk too many unskilled people. These ancient buses couldn’t hold many people, but the population was lower, so part of it was offset. These are also slower than modern buses, so transportation time was also longer.

  8. I didn't know the first school bus was pulled by horses. That is really cool. I don’t think the school bus has really changed that much since 50’s. They still kind of look like the one in the picture.

  9. Certainly not the school buses as we know them today. They're not buses at all really. Did they have any significant heat sources (other than the horses hot breath?) I can't picture having to ride that in the winter months.

  10. What a smelly ride to school?!! These bus's would never be passed today especially with all these animal rights activists. They would be set up waiting for the kids to get off the buss and yell at them! Using a horse is a way to save on gas prices though!

  11. I didn't know they had buses pulled by horses ever! It must have taken so long to get to school. I can't imagine how uncomfortable these rides must have been but I'm sure at that time people thought it was great. They probably walked before. We have come along way with buses since then
