Tarkington Elementary School

The Tarkington Elementary School in Chicago, is a state of the art "Green" school.

It features large windows made of recycled glass to allow in the daylight and wood that was harvested from controlled forests. The materials were all purchased from vendors in a 500 mile radius.

The roof of the building is a roof garden filled with drought resistant plants which aid in insulation.

  1. I could not find the article on the school, however there was an article on the first hybrid-electric school bus. I think it is great they way schools are implementing their curriculum into the actual environment. It must have cost them, but in the end they will get that money back. New schools that are being built in this area are required to have airconditioning in them, why not do something to help our environment and go green like this school.

  2. This is a beautiful green school and the children and faculty of Chicago are very lucky to have such a fine school. I like how open the hallways are, they don’t have that dark, institutional facility feel to them. The garden on the roof is another interesting feature. Hopefully all new structures being built in the future will consider the green theme throughout the building.

  3. It should be mandatory that all new building be green. I just watched a TV show the other night that PNC bank will be building all green building in the future. Great idea.
