Internet Classes for Home Schooled High Schoolers

In the past, home schooled children were academically separated from public school's vast curriculum choices. A current trend is to offer the same courses in the public school, via the Internet, to home schooled children. http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2001/06/06/loc_computer-based.html

  1. I am going to have to disagree and agree with this. First of all, it is taking away the actual learning part of the cirriculum. I am taking business law online and I am so lost its not even funny. I am one of those people who has to hear it from someone else in order to comprehend it fully. Now a child has to teach themselves this crap when they are only in high school? I would have never graduated

  2. I think its about time that Home Schooled Children have the same oppurnities to learn or have the same educational track as those in the public or private system. The internet is a great way to keep children at home synced with children at school. The only missing factor might be the development of social skills.

  3. I really do not like home schooling to begin with. I guess if a parent is extremely qualified that it would be okay, but I'd still be weary. Maybe I just have seen to many wife-swaps with inadequate home schoolers and children many grade levels behind with horrible social problems, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to me. On-line classes for high schoolers scares me too. It is so much harder to keep motivated and learn on-line, and most high schoolers need that push of having a class in person. I know I would never get my work done if it was on-line when I was in high school. It is too easy to be lazy and not see the importance of school at that age.

  4. I agree with Laura for the most part. Online classes can be very difficult, especially if you are one of those people who have to hear it and be taught it, and not teach yourself. At the same time, its great that homeschooled children can get the same education as other highschoolers.

  5. I think that this is a good idea for homeschooling, but i dont neccesarelly like home schooling. Online classes for high schoolers might not be a great idea. like someone else said online classes take alot of motivation.

  6. I agree with most of the rest. I don't think homeschooling is really that great! I really think most of the home school kids I knew came out ok but a little afraid of the world a bit. Using computer is a better way to get them socialized but nothing is better then direct contact.

  7. This is all well and good, but motivation aside, you lose some of the social benefits of traditional school. Do we really want to encourage today's high schoolers to become more sedentary than they aready are? Extra-curricular activities are probably online, too, unless they are nonexistent.

  8. I do not care for online learning. I like the interaction between a student and teacher. I enjoy sharing stories with other students regarding classes and I think that the social interaction is just as important as the subject matter.

  9. I really don't like the idea of young children getting home schooled by the internet especially. Everyday it seems like our world is becoming more and more dependent on the internet which is not entirely good. Also, I think that a kid at a young age needs to be around kids of the same age to gain social interaction.

  11. I disagree with homeschooling too. I feel that children do not learn social skills that they would learn by going to school. I'm sure if you were very strict and made your child do the work, learning could be possible but again...the social skills are not being learned.

  12. Home schooling must be difficult for children to learn working with society in a social environment. As long as the parents still let the children pursue social activities such as sports, etc...I don't see a problem with it. The fact they are getting focused on using the internet can be a good thing if used correctly.

  13. I like the idea, but it takes away the social part that kids learn when going to school. I think it effects on how they view things when they grow up. Even if they have friends, it is just not the same!

  14. high school was some of the best time i had, met so many people had great fun and learned a lot about growing up. It definatly helped me move on and move away to college, so therefore i think homeschooling may not be the way to go.

  15. I like the idea of homeschooling for certain situations. I feel like some kids progress better when they are not slowed down by slower learners.

  16. Online classea are a great way to learn if you cant go to school for whatever reason. This is my first online class and so far it is going great. I am learning a lot from my teachers and fellow class mates.

  17. I have never been one to agree with home schooling unless your parent has some sort of degree in a professional field that could be taught to the child, such as math or a science. But your average (excuse the term) house wife doesn't really have the right to keep her kids out of public education while giving them a sub-par "education" from books given to her by the state, taught however that parent feels like. I think this idea however is a great resource for those who are actually interested in giving their children a good education but may not have the means to put or get a child in to school. A class taught by a qualified instructor is much better than a one taught by a parent reading from a book.

  18. if a child is living in a remote area then i woulsd say its great or if the child isn't able to attend a regular school due to a disability, but what aboutt the socialization of these children where will they learn how to interact with others?

  19. I do not like internet only classes personally, but it does work for some. I think its nice that they are taking into account some home-school options within public schools. I just fear the day where people do not report to any school and sit at their own desk instead of having the school environment. Its coming, just get ready for it.
